Spit roast is generally used for cooking large joints of meat or entire animals, such as Pig Hog Roast, Lamb Lamb Roast or entire cattle. The rotation of a Spit roast cooks the meat evenly in its own juices and allows easy access for continuous basting if desired.

 

The Spit roast is the way we cook a Hog roast at Sizzling Hog Roast. our machines have a viewing window to see the Hog roast rotating while cooking.

 

In medieval and early kitchens, the Spit roast was the preferred way of cooking meat in a large household. A servant, preferably a boy, sat near the Spit roast turning the metal rod slowly cooking the food; he was known as the "spit boy" or "spit jack". More mechanical means were later invented, first moved by dog-powered treadmill ! and then by steam power and mechanical clockwork mechanisms. Hog Roasts or spit roasts are now usually driven by electric motors.

 

When a Hog Roast or spit roast is cooked, balance is important. If the Hog Roast is out of balance, it will impose a heavy load on the drive mechanism or cause the mechanism to fail to turn. Loose pig legs can also cause the mechanism to jam. For these two reasons, some skewering skill is required when doing a Hog Roast.

Spit roast is a style of roasting where meat is skewered on a spit with a long solid rod used to hold the pig or lamb while it is rotating and cooked over a fire or roasted in an oven. A pig cooked by the Spit roasting method is commonly described as a Hog Roast.

 

A Hog Roast can also be cooked by laying the pig on a large roasting

 tray in an oven.

This method of cooking could not be described as a spit roast.
